Réaumur to Celsius Converter
Definition
The Réaumur scale (°Ré or °R) is a temperature scale where 0° is water’s freezing point and 80° its boiling point, with each degree representing 1/80 of that range. The celsius scale (°C) sets 0° at freezing and 100° at boiling, dividing the range into 100 equal parts, widely used today.
History
René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur created the Réaumur scale in 1730, using an alcohol thermometer, popular in Europe (especially France and Russia) until the 19th century. The celsius scale, introduced by Anders Celsius in 1742, overtook Réaumur due to its simpler 100-degree range and metric system adoption in the 1790s.
